Motocross for teenagers: technique, fitness and perseverance

Engines and technology fascinate many teenagers, which is why teen motocross wins them over so easily. But the sport demands more than just opening the throttle. It trains discipline, coordination, fitness, technical understanding and perseverance. Speed comes from clean technique, balance and a fine touch on throttle, clutch and brake – never from raw strength or more risk. That is exactly what teenagers learn step by step on the course.

At the MX-Academy you can try youth motocross or take it up regularly. To get started, the MX-Academy does not recommend a single hour for teenagers but the longer track time: 3.5 hrs on Wednesday or 4 hrs on Saturday, breaks and instruction included. With more time on the track you settle into the sport better and see real progress. The one-hour taster course is intended more for children aged 4 to 6.

Youth motocross in a group course: learning at your own pace

In youth motocross the teenagers ride together, but each of them learns at their own pace. Every exercise starts with an explanation, a coach helps with pulling away, and on the track he rides ahead to show the lines. Along the way he corrects seating position and line of sight. Once the young riders can do the same as the adults, they move into the adults' group and ride together with them.

For teenagers the Honda CRF250 is ready. Smaller riders start on the CRF125 or CRF150: the CRF150 is designed for competition and ideal for 12- to 16-year-olds, while the CRF125 is good for learning how to use the clutch. Beginners ride the F version: quiet, with fuel injection and electric start, and built by Honda specifically for getting started in off-road riding.

Youth motocross with a rental bike while you are still growing

Anyone who is still growing will soon need the next size. So that you don't have to keep investing again and again, you can rent everything for youth motocross – the bike as well as helmet, goggles, boots, gloves and body protectors. That way you first find out whether the enjoyment of the sport lasts, and after that there are different paths, depending on how intensively you want to ride. All you bring yourself is long trousers and sturdy shoes.

If you bring your own bike, you pay €163 (CHF 150) on Wednesday and €195 (CHF 180) on Saturday. These prices assume that you already ride safely on your own; if that is not yet the case, extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added. On your first visit to the MX-Academy, coaching is compulsory for everyone. All prices are non-binding and subject to change.

Youth motocross on a regular basis: Motocross team and Motocross club

If trying it out is to become a hobby, two paths are open. The MX-Academy Motocross team works with a riding technique plan in several stages and levels; you can join with your own or a rented bike. In the Motocross club, children and teenagers have their own training group and their own track; they only move on to the more difficult one when they are ready. Girls are just as welcome as boys.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.
