Motorbike Riding Off-Road

Is this right for you?

Yes, if …

  • You're looking for action and have never ridden a motorbike
  • You want to bring friends or family along to watch or ride with you
  • You already ride and want professionals to fine-tune your technique
  • You want a whole day on the track instead of just one hour

Off-road motorbike riding: action with no prior knowledge

In Switzerland, “moto” is the everyday word for a motorbike, and at the MX-Academy riding a motorbike means heading off-road on a motocross bike. If you are looking for variety and action, you have come to the right place. You need neither prior knowledge nor a driving licence, just a passion for two wheels. Experienced motocross riders and professionals from the team will quickly get you ready for your first laps on your own.

Don't worry if all this is new to you: around seven out of ten course participants have never ridden a motorcycle before. If you bring enthusiasm and a little ambition, you will soon be riding without help. Your first attempt might even turn into a new hobby that challenges and excites you.

Motorbike lessons: theory first, then the right track

Every motorbike course starts at the MX-Academy shop in Schlatt TG. After checking in, you put on your gear, and then an experienced professional explains what matters in a detailed theory session. Only then do you head outside. Because both the bikes and the tracks come in several levels of difficulty, your first attempt matches what you can already do.

Beginners ride on the separate beginners' track first; in total, the grounds have four tracks. The bikes come from Honda's off-road range; for getting started these are the F models with fuel injection, electric start and a quiet engine. If you don't have your own, the MX-Academy provides the protective gear: boots, knee guards, chest protector, gloves, goggles and helmet.

If you already have experience, you get tips that help you expand your skills. Together with the coaches you find out where things are getting stuck and work specifically on individual techniques. The atmosphere at the track is relaxed, so feel free to ask anything that's on your mind. What the coaches pass on is based on the knowledge Chris Möckli has gathered over decades – founder and owner of the MX-Academy and two-time European champion.

You are welcome to bring friends, family and acquaintances. They can watch your laps or hop on a bike themselves. If a whole group wants to ride motorbikes together, there are team building events, price on request. If you want to keep going after your first day, you can continue with motocross training.

Motorbike riding: travelling from Germany and Austria

By car, you reach Schlatt TG from Waldshut-Tiengen in around 1 hour, from Kempten in around 2 hrs 25 min, from Augsburg in around 3 hours and from Nuremberg in around 4 hours. From Austria, allow around 3 hrs 30 min from Innsbruck. If you are coming from Berlin (around 8 hrs 10 min), plan for a Saturday and, if you like, arrive the day before.

Without a car, take bus 847, get off at “Schlatt TG, Mettschlatt” and walk around 70 m to the shop. For such a long journey the full day is worth it: 3.5 hours of track time including breaks on Wednesday for €390 (CHF 360) or 4 hours on Saturday for €444 (CHF 410), each with motorbike, gear and coaching (non-binding).

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear.
