Off-Road Riding

Is this right for you?

Yes, if …

  • You want to try off-road riding for the first time under guidance
  • You would rather rent everything than buy your own gear
  • You want to improve your body control and riding technique on the bike
  • You want to train in a targeted way on your own off-road motorcycle

Off-road riding with around 100 kg and 40 hp

An off-road motorcycle at the MX-Academy is no toy: the competition models weigh around 100 kg and deliver about 40 hp. Handling this power is something you have to learn. That is why nobody rides without coaching on their first visit – it is compulsory. The theory beforehand shows you how to handle a bike like this; on the track you then try it out yourself.

When you ride off-road, you mainly train how to use your body on the bike – and with it your entire riding ability. Balance, reactions and coordination are all needed at the same time, and that is exactly what makes it so appealing. Beginners start on lighter rental bikes built for getting into off-road, while experienced riders switch to competition models. The MX-Academy's Honda CRF bikes cover many body sizes, from the CRF50 for the little ones to the CRF250 for adults.

Off-road training: from basic posture to sand

Off-road is a complex sport. It takes a lot of practice before the advanced techniques really stick. A one-day off-road course lays the foundation; anyone who wants to carry on comes back and builds on what they have learned. For regular sessions with a clear structure, the MX-Academy also offers motocross training.

That is why the training follows a clear order. At the start come basic posture and balance, because everything else builds on them. During the breaks there are further tips along the way. Only once this foundation is solid do the coaches add, step by step, the techniques that build on it:

  • Basic posture on the bike
  • Balance and stability
  • Jumping
  • Riding ruts
  • Riding in sand

Off-road course with rental gear or your own bike

Your own gear is not a requirement. Motorcycle, protective clothing and coaching are available to rent, with sizes from kids to XXL. The gear includes helmet and goggles, a chest protector, knee guards, boots and gloves. Everything is fitted on site. Your own clothing: long trousers, sturdy shoes – that's all you need to pack.

If you already have your own off-road motorcycle, you can take part on it too. Only book the cheaper course day with your own gear if you already ride independently; if you still lack this experience, the extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is part of it (non-binding). Very experienced riders can also ride with the MX-Academy in the dunes of Dubai – find out more under Motocross Dubai.

Off-road riding near me? Honest journey times from Germany

If you search for “off-road riding near me”, you should know the distances. From Singen it is about 30 min, from Waldshut-Tiengen about 1 hr, from Villingen-Schwenningen also about 1 hr, from Karlsruhe about 2 hrs 30 min and from Cologne about 5 hrs 20 min to Schlatt TG. If you travel that far, it's best to arrive the day before and make use of the Saturday with 4 hours of track time, breaks included. On Wednesday, 3.5 hours are available, also including breaks.

Just one hour of track time hardly pays off with journeys this long. For teenagers and adults, the full day course is therefore what the MX-Academy recommends, because it gives you a real impression of the sport. The start is at the MX-Academy Shop, Hauptstrasse 8. If you take bus 847, get off at “Schlatt TG, Mettschlatt” and walk about 70 m to the shop.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.
