Motorcycle Safety Training

Is this right for you?

Yes, if …

  • You ride an adventure bike and want to keep it under control on loose ground too
  • You want to prepare for a planned enduro trip
  • You want to learn the technique on a light bike first and spare your own
  • You want to combine theory and practice in one day

Motorcycle safety training for adventure bikes

Do you ride an adventure bike such as a Yamaha Ténéré, Honda Africa Twin, Suzuki V-Strom, BMW GS, Triumph Tiger, KTM Adventure, Ducati Multistrada Enduro or Kawasaki Versys, and want to handle it confidently off-road too? That is exactly what this training is for. You learn the necessary riding techniques in theory, understand them and then put them into practice step by step. This works at every level, because everyone is challenged without being overwhelmed.

All common travel enduros and adventure bikes are welcome, from the 450 cc entry-level model to the 1300 boxer, plus other models with a 21-inch front wheel or knobbly tyres. What you learn on the course day transfers directly to your own bike. If your bike is not on this list, check briefly by e-mail beforehand.

Off-road training for adventure bikes: first on a light bike

After the theory, you start the first exercises on an MX-Academy motocross bike. It is considerably lighter and more agile than a heavy adventure bike. That makes the off-road techniques easier to master, and your own expensive motorcycle doesn't pick up unnecessary scratches while you are still practising. You also wear professional motocross gear that protects you as well as possible.

On the light bike you first practise the basic riding position and cornering technique. You train where you look and learn to shift your weight at the right moment until it feels natural. If you don't have an adventure bike of your own, you ride an MX-Academy motocross bike all day with the complete package.

What you practise in motorcycle safety training

The programme is all about riding away from paved roads. After the course day you know the theory and can move your motorcycle safely even where the terrain gets difficult. You know how to react in each situation and can put it into practice. Riding off-road stops being a struggle and becomes a pleasure, and you can look forward to your next enduro trip.

Because four tracks are available in Schlatt, all safety training sessions take place alongside the other motocross and enduro courses. That is why there is no separate calendar: as with every course, you book via the MX-Academy's motocross events calendar, where you choose the date and group.

  • Standing riding position
  • Where to look
  • Mastering lean angles
  • Climbs and descents
  • Braking on loose ground
  • How to react in emergencies

Motorcycle safety training: travelling from Germany

By car, Schlatt TG is around 45 minutes from Konstanz, around 2 hours from Stuttgart and around 3 hrs 05 min from Mannheim. If you are travelling from Düsseldorf (around 5 hrs 40 min), a Saturday is the better choice, and you can arrive the day before if you like. From Austria, for example from Feldkirch, allow around 1 hr 40 min. You don't need a driving licence for the training, as riding only takes place on private grounds.

With your own adventure bike, you pay €163 (CHF 150) on Wednesday or €195 (CHF 180) on Saturday for track hire and the basic course. This applies to everyone who can already ride their motorcycle on their own; if you can't, add extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50). The complete package with motocross bike, protective gear and coaching costs €390 (CHF 360) or €444 (CHF 410) respectively. All prices are non-binding and subject to change.

FAQ: Motorcycle Safety Training

Do I need a driving licence for motorcycle safety training?

No. Training only takes place on the school's private grounds, away from public roads – nobody asks for a driving licence there.

Which adventure bikes are suitable for the safety training?

Practically every common travel enduro and adventure bike, such as the Yamaha Ténéré, Honda Africa Twin, Suzuki V-Strom, BMW GS, Triumph Tiger, KTM Adventure, Ducati Multistrada Enduro or Kawasaki Versys. Any other bike with knobbly tyres or a 21-inch front wheel is suitable too.

Do I have to bring my own adventure bike?

No. With the complete package you ride an MX-Academy motocross bike, with protective gear and coaching, for €390 (CHF 360) on Wednesday or €444 (CHF 410) on Saturday (non-binding).

How long does motorcycle safety training last?

The whole course day lasts 6 to 8 hours including check-in, theory and kitting out. On the track you have 3.5 hours (Wednesday) or 4 hours (Saturday), including breaks and instruction.

Where do I book the safety training?

In the MX-Academy's regular events calendar. A separate schedule of dates is not needed, because the training runs at the same time as the motocross and enduro courses on the four tracks.
