Motocross riding instead of just watching: at the MX-Academy, you sit on the bike yourself, even if you have never ridden before. The coaches get you to the point where, after one day, you ride your own laps on the track independently.

Motocross Riding

Is this right for you?

Yes, if …

  • you have long wanted to ride motocross yourself and haven't had the chance so far
  • you want to get started without previous experience and without a driving licence
  • you want to ride your own laps on the track after one day
  • you already ride and want to improve your cornering and balance

Where to ride motocross? On official tracks

In motocross, you ride an off-road motorbike on specially built tracks with corners, rollers and jumps. In Switzerland, this is only permitted on official tracks, not on public land. In Schlatt TG, the MX-Academy runs its own facility with four tracks, registered in the NASAK as an official motocross training facility. One of them is a separate track for kids and beginners.

Because you ride on private grounds there, you don't need a driving licence. You can take part from around age 4; the oldest participants were 74. Whether you call it motocross, motorcross or simply MX: it is the same sport, and here you can try it yourself from the very first metre, without any gear of your own. You get the bike and protective gear on site.

Ride a motocross bike yourself: your own lap in one day

Most participants start as complete novices, and yet they usually have the bike well under control during the first day. The coaches get you to the point where you ride independently on the track and apply the basic techniques. On the track, a coach rides ahead, shows you the lines and corrects your seating position and where you look. You progress at your own pace.

If you already have experience, you get tips to expand your skills. The coaches, all experienced motocross riders and professionals, show you in theory and practice how to corner better and find more balance on the bike. Smaller women and children get bikes and protective gear in the right size, so that everyone can enjoy motocross riding with the right equipment.

Learn motocross: technique over strength

When you learn motocross, a simple principle applies: you only get faster with better riding technique. Precise timing, balance and exact use of all the controls take you further – more courage, strength or willingness to take risks never do. The higher the speed, the less time you have to keep the bike balanced. That is why the MX-Academy trains in different groups and on several tracks, so that no one is overwhelmed or under-challenged.

If you have caught the bug after the first day, you can also learn difficult techniques that require regular training in the Motocross team of the MX-Academy. As a special experience, the MX-Academy also offers motocross in Dubai, where you ride the bike through the sand. The learning plan for novices includes, among other things:

  • Basic position and balance
  • Cornering and off-road braking technique
  • Rollers and first jumps
  • Safe behaviour on the track

Motocross riding from Munich, Augsburg, Ulm or Kempten

Even from further afield, the journey is very manageable. By car, you reach Schlatt TG from Ulm in around 2 hrs 20 min (166 km), from Kempten in around 2 hrs 25 min (176 km), from Augsburg in around 3 hrs (260 km) and from Munich in around 3 hrs 20 min (282 km), each calculated without traffic. For your satnav, enter the MX-Academy Shop, Hauptstrasse 8, because that is where every course starts.

With several hours' journey, only a whole course day is worthwhile, because a single hour on the track would be out of all proportion to the journey. Saturday offers 4 hours of track time including breaks, and if you like, you can arrive the day before. With registration, theory and gear, your day at the MX-Academy lasts 6 to 8 hours. With rental bike, protective gear and coaching, Saturday costs €444 (CHF 410), non-binding. The Motocross events calendar shows which Saturdays are still available.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.

FAQ: Motocross Riding

Can you come from Munich to the MX-Academy for motocross riding?

Yes, by car it is around 3 hrs 20 min (282 km) to Schlatt TG. Over this distance, Saturday with 4 hrs of track time makes sense; if you like, you can come the day before.

Can you ride motocross without a driving licence?

Yes, because the MX-Academy rides on private grounds. A driving licence is not required for any of its training sessions.

How quickly can you learn motocross?

Most novices ride independently on the track after one course day and apply the basic techniques. Jumps, sand or ruts then require regular training.

What clothing do I need for my first time on a motocross bike?

Wear long trousers and sturdy shoes – that is all you need. You get the helmet, boots and all protectors on site in your size.

Is motocross riding dangerous?

Without the necessary technique, motocross can be dangerous. That is why coaching is compulsory for first-time participants, and the MX-Academy consistently relies on riding technique rather than risk.
