What makes a dirt bike

The MX-Academy's competition models weigh a good 100 kg and deliver around 40 hp. That is something completely different from a rental go-kart: you have to know how to handle a real competition motorcycle and be properly equipped. That is why nobody sets off without theory and protective gear, and newcomers always have coaching with them – it is compulsory.

On the bike, your whole body works. Your heart rate rises to 160 to 210, while balance, reactions and coordination are needed at the same time. Motocross is an anaerobic sport, which is why a course day includes plenty of breaks. It is precisely during these breaks that the coaches give further tips and tricks that you can put into practice straight away on the next lap.

Dirt bike for beginners: the Honda F version

For getting started, the MX-Academy recommends the Honda models with the letter F, which stands for Family: CRF50F, CRF110F, CRF125F and CRF250F. From the CRF110F upwards, their engine is supplied with fuel by injection, they start at the push of a button, and all of them run quietly and with little impact on the environment. Honda built them specifically for off-road beginners. That lets you concentrate fully on technique.

There is also the R version, where R stands for Racing: competition bikes for everyone who already rides confidently. Both versions are available as rental bikes. Complete newcomers, children or rather petite women can also get on an automatic bike with much less power. As long as there is still some uncertainty, a coach accompanies you on the track until you have the bike under control yourself.

The right dirt bike motorcycle for every size

As a kids dirt bike, depending on age and size, children can choose from the Honda CRF50 and CRF70 as well as the CRF110, CRF125 and CRF150; from the teenage years on, riders use the CRF250. Matching protective gear is ready too, from kids' sizes to XXL: boots, knee guards, chest protector, gloves, goggles and helmet. What you wear yourself when you arrive: long trousers and sturdy shoes.

You don't need a bike of your own to start with. If you want your own motorcycle later, the Honda Motoshop at the MX-Academy will advise you on which model suits you best. There you will find motorcycles in all sizes and for every level, including small bikes for children and suitable models for smaller women.

Try a dirt bike: day course and getting here

The best way to get to know a dirt bike is on a full course day. On Wednesday you have 3.5 hours of track time available, on Saturday 4 hours, each including breaks and instruction. Before that come registration at the MX-Academy Shop, your gear and a detailed theory session. A taster course with one hour of track time is intended more for children aged 4 to 6, who are often tired afterwards.

From Friedrichshafen you can be in Schlatt TG in about 1 hr 15 min, from Kempten in about 2 hrs 25 min and from Augsburg in about 3 hours. Coming from Berlin at about 8 hrs 10 min or Hamburg at about 8 hrs 15 min, it is best to arrive the day before and plan for the Saturday. That way your head is clear for the motorcycle on the course day and you can use all of your track time.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.
