Extreme sports: why motocross counts as one

When it comes to extreme sports, many people think of action in an extra-large dose. Motocross delivers exactly that: the sport is classed as an extreme sport and is anaerobic. On the track, riders' heart rates are around 160 to 210 beats per minute, depending on terrain and speed. At the same time, balance, reactions and coordination are working flat out, because the terrain changes constantly and every lap demands new decisions.

With your right hand you control the throttle and front brake, with your left you pull the clutch, your right foot brakes at the rear, your left foot changes gear – and your whole body keeps the bike balanced. This interplay is what makes this action sport so appealing. Because mind and muscles work so hard, plenty of breaks are a fixed part of the day. That is exactly when you get tips from the coaches for the next lap.

Adrenaline sports on competition bikes: around 100 kg and 40 hp

At the MX-Academy, there are no toys waiting for you, but real Honda competition bikes as well. Such a bike brings a good 100 kg and around 40 hp to the track, and that power needs to be mastered. That is why everyone who comes for the first time takes part with coaching – it is compulsory. In the theory session, you first learn how the bike responds; then you put what you have learned straight into practice off-road.

Beginners ride the Honda F versions; F stands for Family. These models start at the push of a button, use fuel injection, stay pleasantly quiet and are specially designed for getting started off-road. For children, novices and smaller women, there are bikes with noticeably less power, some with automatic transmission. If you feel unsure, you get a coach who rides alongside until the bike does what you want.

Extreme sports with brains: technique, not risk

In adrenaline sports like this, extreme does not mean reckless. You only get faster with clean riding technique, more balance and a finer feel for throttle, clutch and brakes – it never works with more strength or higher risk. That is why the coaches divide everyone into groups by ability and work with 5 levels of difficulty. On 4 tracks, including a separate kids' and beginners' track, every level finds the right terrain.

This training facility is listed in the NASAK, the federal inventory of Swiss Olympics. From home, you only need long trousers and sturdy shoes. You can rent chest protector, helmet, goggles, gloves, knee guards and boots in sizes from children's to XXL. You will find the process from registration to your first lap in the daily schedule on this page.
