Freeride Extremeat theMX-Academy

Freeride extreme means no fixed route, no markings – you choose the way. To pull that off, you need full control of the bike, and that is exactly what you train at the MX-Academy on the motocross track.

Freeride Extreme

Is this right for you?

Yes, if …

  • you want to ride freely off-road or on dunes later on
  • you want to learn balance and bike control from scratch
  • you already ride and want to become more confident on slopes and in sand
  • you want to prepare for a motocross adventure in Dubai

Freeride extreme: what freeriding on a motorcycle is all about

Freeride is one of the extreme sports. You ride on natural, uneven terrain instead of a marked-out track. That makes freeriding freer and more creative than classic motocross, and it borrows elements from motocross, enduro and freestyle. You pick your own line, read the ground ahead of you and decide in seconds where to brake, where to open the throttle and where to shift your weight.

This freedom comes at a price, because freeride extreme demands maximum concentration and confident control of your body and bike. Anyone who loses their balance on a slope or gets the throttle wrong in sand soon realises that courage alone won't get them far. That is why the MX-Academy follows one clear principle: you only become faster and safer through better technique, never through taking more risk.

Freeride motorcycle skills: learning the technique on the motocross track

What you need for freeride extreme out in open terrain, you build up on the tracks of the MX-Academy. You start with seating position, where to look and the fine interplay of throttle, clutch and brakes. Corners, climbs and later jumps build on this, each at whichever of the 5 difficulty levels matches your ability. That way your control grows step by step.

Coaching is compulsory for newcomers. You ride a Honda: beginners start on the F versions, experienced riders move up to the competition bikes of the R series. Boots, gloves, chest protector, knee guards, helmet and goggles are available to rent on site, as is the bike itself. Your own contribution to the gear is limited to long trousers and sturdy shoes.

From freeride training to motocross in the desert

For many, the big freeride dream is a ride across dunes. The MX-Academy has something on offer for that too: motocross in Dubai, with rides through desert sand. There is no marked-out route there and, above all, one thing: sand in every form. This challenge can hardly be recreated here, which makes solid technique all the more important before you set off for the desert.

You are free to choose your date for Motocross Dubai. How well prepared you should be is something you can discuss by email at info@mx-academy.ch. A day course at the MX-Academy is a sensible first step, because there you train balance, corners and climbs under guidance. That way you already know before the trip how the bike reacts to you on slopes and in corners.

Freeride preparation: getting here from southern Baden and Austria

From Freiburg you reach Schlatt TG by car in around 1 hr 40 min, from Waldshut-Tiengen in around 1 hr and from Karlsruhe in around 2 hrs 30 min. From Austria, allow around 1 hr 40 min from Feldkirch and around 3 hrs 30 min from Innsbruck. For a journey like that, the full day course is worthwhile: 3.5 hrs of track time on Wednesday or 4 hrs on Saturday, including breaks and instruction.

The breaks are no luxury. Motocross is an anaerobic sport, every lap works your whole body, and working on slopes in particular takes strength. Including rental bike, gear and coaching, the day course costs €390 (CHF 360) on Wednesday and €444 (CHF 410) on Saturday, both non-binding. If you count registration, the theory session and getting changed, you will spend 6 to 8 hours on site, so plan your journey home accordingly.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.
