Enduro for beginners: getting started with no previous experience

Whether you already have a few metres off-road behind you or have never sat on an enduro bike, it makes no difference for getting started. The MX-Academy coaches look at where you stand, identify your weaknesses and adapt the exercises to you. Riding takes place in groups by riding ability, so that beginners make progress at their own pace.

On your first visit, coaching is compulsory for everyone. The course day follows fixed steps: arrival at the MX-Academy shop, registration, collecting your gear and a detailed theory session. Then you head out, and between the laps everyone takes regular breaks in which the coaches show you more tricks for your enduro riding.

Do you need a licence for enduro? Not on the training grounds

Many people ask before their first course whether they need a driving licence. The answer is no. The MX-Academy trains on private, approved grounds instead of on public roads, which is why no driving licence is needed for the course. There is plenty of leeway when it comes to age, too: children of around 4 and adults up to 74 have already taken part.

In Switzerland you are not allowed to ride enduro outside approved grounds. That is why the MX-Academy's enduro courses take place on its own site, which is listed in the National Sports Facilities Concept NASAK, a federal inventory of Swiss Olympics. Of the four tracks there, one is reserved exclusively for children and beginners; on it you ride your first laps in peace.

First a light rental bike, then your own enduro bike

Learning is much easier on a light and nimble motocross bike than on a heavy enduro. To get started, the MX-Academy provides Honda models in the F version; the F stands for Family. Their engine is supplied by fuel injection and started at the push of a button, they run quietly and are kind to the environment. Teenagers and adults get on a CRF250, children on the smaller CRF models.

Once you have the basics, you take them with you onto your own, heavier enduro bike. The MX-Academy considers this order the most effective way to learn. But if you feel confident enough from the start, you may also turn up straight away with your own enduro. However, the course day with your own bike is only intended for riders who already ride without help; beginners add extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50), non-binding.

What you learn first in enduro riding

The basic techniques are the same in enduro and motocross, and all the more difficult manoeuvres later build on them. Anyone who wants to learn enduro riding therefore makes faster progress if this foundation is right from the start, and won't have to laboriously unlearn anything later. The programme for beginners includes the following points, among others:

  • riding position standing up and sitting down
  • riding over obstacles such as roots, stones and tree trunks
  • pulling away on a slope and braking on a descent
  • cornering technique off-road
  • first trial elements

FAQ: Learn Enduro Riding

Do I need an enduro driving licence to learn enduro riding?

No. You learn on the private training grounds of the MX-Academy and not on public roads, so a driving licence is not needed.

Can I start without my own enduro bike?

Yes, because the day course with rental provides you with the bike, protective clothing and coaching. It costs €390 (CHF 360) on Wednesday and €444 (CHF 410) on Saturday, non-binding.

From what age can you learn enduro riding?

At the MX-Academy, training is possible from age 4. For the youngest there is also the special Kids motocross programme.

What do I need to bring as an enduro beginner?

Long trousers and sturdy shoes are enough. You get helmet, goggles, boots, gloves, chest protector and knee guards on site; a change of clothes for after the course is a good idea.

Is a light bike better for getting started than a heavy enduro?

Yes, on a light and nimble motocross bike you learn the techniques more easily. Afterwards you apply them on your own enduro.
