Kids Quads and Mini Quadsat theMX-Academy

A kids quad or mini quad for your child? Here you can find out what matters when it comes to size, engine size and protective gear. The MX-Academy has no quad programme of its own at the moment – for children from age 4, it recommends trying motocross.

Kids quad: choosing the right model by height and engine size

Various kids' quads are built even for the very youngest. Which model fits depends on height and riding ability, and the choice of engine size classes is correspondingly wide. A small 50 cc mini quad is a good choice for getting started. A 90 cc kids quad, on the other hand, is intended for children and teenagers who can already ride and handle the quad safely.

One useful safety detail is the kill-switch lanyard. If a mini quad has such a lanyard, it shuts off in a fall and cannot carry on without the child. If you want to buy a kids quad, it is best to make sure that size and power suit your child – and not what they might be able to do in a few years' time.

Quad for kids: don't underestimate weight and power

Even the smallest models carry a fair amount of weight and power. That is why kids' quad riding always calls for full protective gear, as worn in motocross: helmet, goggles, chest protector, knee guards, boots and gloves. Full motocross equipment is therefore just as suitable for a mini quad and gives your child extra safety.

With a quad it is no different from kids motocross: the right basics count from the very start. The better your child masters the technique, the more fun they have. They should only move up to a bigger model or a more difficult track once they really have their quad and their current track under control.

Kids quad at the MX-Academy? Kids motocross for now

Quad riding for kids is not currently offered at the MX-Academy. Instead, it recommends trying motocross – after all, the basic rules are the same, and there is a complete programme for children from age 4. Your child rides a Honda from the kids' range, from the automatic CRF50 to the CRF150, and wears full protective gear in children's sizes.

A coach stays with beginners until throttle and brake work safely; for the first laps there is a separate track for children and beginners. For 4- to 6-year-olds, the taster course with 1 hr of track time for €179 (CHF 165) is the right fit, while older children make more progress in the day course with rental for €390 (CHF 360) on Wednesday (non-binding). Your child does not need a driving licence for this, because riding takes place on private grounds.

Mini quad or motocross: travelling with children from Germany

By car, it takes you around 30 minutes from Singen to Schlatt TG in Switzerland, around 55 minutes from Tuttlingen and around 1 hr 15 min from Friedrichshafen. From Stuttgart it is around 2 hrs, from Augsburg around 3 hrs. If you are coming from further away, a full course day is worth more than a single hour. If you take the bus, get off at “Schlatt TG, Mettschlatt”, just around 70 m from the MX-Academy Shop.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.

€179 (CHF 165)1-hour taster course (track time incl. breaks and instruction) – every other Wednesday, mainly for children aged 4 to 6 who can concentrate for about an hour. Motocross taster course

FAQ: Kids Quads and Mini Quads

Are there kids quad courses at the MX-Academy?

Not at the moment – the MX-Academy currently has no quad programme. For children from age 4, it recommends kids motocross, with a rented Honda kids' bike, protective gear and a coach.

What engine size should a mini quad have for beginners?

A 50 cc mini quad is well suited to beginners. A 90 cc kids quad is only right for children and teenagers with riding experience.

What should a child wear on a kids quad?

The same full protective gear as in motocross, from helmet to boots. Even small quads are heavy and powerful.

What does a kill-switch lanyard on a kids quad do?

It shuts off the mini quad in a fall, so that it does not keep going without the child.

Why does the MX-Academy recommend motocross instead of a kids quad?

It currently has no quads in its programme, and the basic rules are the same in kids motocross. From as young as 4, your child rides an automatic Honda CRF50 there, and a coach stays with them until they have mastered the bike.
