Closed tracks · soft ground
Off-road motorcycle riding means no oncoming traffic, soft ground and room to run off. At the MX-Academy you ride off-road on closed tracks – as a beginner with a coach, with experience in the group that matches your pace.

Off-Road Motorcycle Riding
On a closed track away from public roads, you are in control of what happens. Nobody comes towards you, there are run-off zones beside the line, and the ground is soft. That is exactly what makes riding a motorcycle off-road so instructive: you can try new things without having to watch out for other road users. And the fun that terrain like this offers is many times greater.
Swiss Olympics lists the MX-Academy training facility in the federal NASAK inventory, the National Sports Facilities Concept. There are four tracks on the site, one of which is reserved for children and beginners. On the others, corners, whoops and sand sections await, where you learn to handle your bike with feeling.
Whether you are sitting on two wheels for the first time or already have some experience: the MX-Academy divides everyone into groups so that each person has as much fun as possible and makes good progress. Beginners take their first steps on soft ground with plenty of run-off. A coach rides pillion behind you until you are in control yourself. For an easier start, a bike without a clutch is also available.
As soon as you understand balance and position and can operate the controls confidently, you ride your laps on the track on your own. If you already have off-road experience, you get tips and tricks from the professional coaches, for example on cornering technique or riding in sand, and train in a group with a similar pace.
You bring your own bike or rent one from the MX-Academy, and the same goes for the protective gear. The bikes are Honda CRFs. For beginners these are the F models such as the CRF125F or CRF250F: quiet, with fuel injection and electric start. If you ride in a sportier style, you take a competition model from the R series. Honda Switzerland supports the MX-Academy.
With your own gear, the course day costs €163 (CHF 150) on Wednesday or €195 (CHF 180) on Saturday. However, this only applies if you can already handle your bike and ride on your own; if not, extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added on top. All prices are non-binding and subject to change.

Women, children and men are at the facility on the same course day, each in the group that suits their ability. There are smaller bikes for women and children; children ride the Honda CRF50, CRF70, CRF110, CRF125 or CRF150, for example. Protective gear is available in all sizes, from children's sizes to XXL. All you contribute yourself is long trousers and sturdy footwear. Prices are the same for everyone; the only difference is the question: rental or your own gear?

From Friedrichshafen you reach Schlatt TG by car in around 1 hr 15 min, from Rottweil in around 1 hour, from Karlsruhe in around 2 hrs 30 min and from Frankfurt in around 3 hrs 45 min. From Austria, for example from Bregenz, it takes around 1 hr 35 min. All times are without traffic. Your first stop on site: the MX-Academy shop, Hauptstrasse 8.
With distances like these, everything speaks for a full course day rather than a single hour. Including coaching, rental bike and protective gear, you pay €390 (CHF 360) on Wednesdays and €444 (CHF 410) on Saturdays, non-binding. If you are coming from further away, choose Saturday and, if you like, arrive the day before.
Meeting point and sat-nav address: the MX-Academy Shop, Hauptstrasse 8, Schlatt TG.
At the shop reception you sign in for your course day.
You get a helmet, goggles, chest protector, knee guards, boots and gloves in your size – and a Honda CRF that suits you.
Before you start, the coaches calmly explain how riding off-road works.
On the track, riding and breaks alternate – with more tips and tricks from the coaches.
3.5 hrs track time incl. breaks and instruction
4 hrs track time incl. breaks and instruction
A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.
