Throttle, balance, clutch – one at a time
The best place to learn to ride a motorcycle is where you can practise each step on its own: on the MX-Academy's private grounds, with a light motorcycle and a coach at your side until you are riding your laps on your own.

Learn to Ride a Motorcycle
New movements sink in fastest when you practise them separately. That is why at the MX-Academy you start on a small, lightweight motorcycle with an automatic clutch. At the beginning only two things count: the throttle and a good seating position. Once you have both down, you learn to balance the motorcycle. And only when that works too is it the turn of the clutch.
This way you never have to think about everything at once. Each step builds on the previous one, and you quickly notice how individual actions turn into smooth riding. Away from public roads, with no traffic and plenty of run-off space, learning is also far more relaxed.

Every technique should be right from the very first lap. Getting rid of a bad posture once it has become ingrained takes much more effort than learning it correctly straight away. That is why you are accompanied by pros with many years of racing and coaching experience. If necessary, a coach rides along at the start until you have full control of the motorcycle yourself.
Nobody is rushed. The coaches adapt to each participant individually and stay with a technique until it has really sunk in. Because motocross is physically demanding, breaks are a fixed part of the track time; that is exactly when you get tips and tricks for the next lap. Behind the school is Chris Möckli, two-time European champion, as founder and owner.
By the evening at the latest, you will usually be riding the beginners' circuit on your own, and some even manage the track for intermediate riders. How quickly you progress depends on how you take in new things and how well your balance and coordination play along. For newcomers, the MX-Academy therefore recommends the full course day: 3.5 hours of track time on Wednesday or 4 hours on Saturday, including breaks and instruction.
Age and height are no obstacle. There are motorcycles in every size, including for children and petite women; the youngest participants are around 4 years old, the oldest 74. For the youngest children aged 4 to 6, the taster course with 1 hour of track time, held every other Wednesday, is the right fit. Parents and children can also start on the same day, each in the right group.

From Villingen-Schwenningen or Rottweil it takes around 1 hour by car to Schlatt TG, from Freiburg around 1 hr 40 min, from Ulm around 2 hrs 20 min and from Munich around 3 hrs 20 min. If you live in Cologne (around 5 hrs 20 min) or even further away, ideally choose a Saturday and, if you like, arrive the day before.
You don't need a driving licence, because all the learning takes place on private grounds. On site, you put on the protective gear provided; from home, long trousers and a pair of sturdy shoes are all you need. Coaching is compulsory on your first visit. Including rental bike, protective gear and coaching, Wednesday costs €390 (CHF 360), Saturday €444 (CHF 410) and Saturday with catering €471 (CHF 435). All prices are non-binding and subject to change.
Meeting point and sat-nav address: the MX-Academy Shop, Hauptstrasse 8, Schlatt TG.
At the shop reception you sign in for your course day.
You get a helmet, goggles, chest protector, knee guards, boots and gloves in your size – and a Honda CRF that suits you.
Before you start, the coaches calmly explain how riding off-road works.
On the track, riding and breaks alternate – with more tips and tricks from the coaches.
3.5 hrs track time incl. breaks and instruction
4 hrs track time incl. breaks and instruction
A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.
