Kids Dirt Bikes from Age 4

Is this right for you?

Yes, if …

  • your child is 4 or older and needs a bike in their size
  • you want to test first before buying your own kids' bike
  • your child wants to learn the clutch later and move on to a bike with gears
  • you are travelling for the course day and want to use the full track time

Kids dirt bike from age 4: starting on the Honda CRF50

Can a four-year-old already ride motocross? At the MX-Academy, yes – riding a kids dirt bike starts at age 4. This is made possible by the Honda CRF50 – there is no smaller motocross bike on the market. It has an automatic transmission with a centrifugal clutch: the child twists the throttle and brakes, but doesn't have to shift gears or use the clutch yet. That leaves their mind free for balance, vision and posture.

Whether your child is ready depends less on their birthday than on their height and concentration. For the youngest, a coach rides alongside until throttle and brake work reliably, and helps in difficult moments. The facility has its own kids' and beginners' track for this. The programme is tailored to the ability of each individual child.

Kids motocross bike: which Honda bike suits which age

The complete Honda kids' range is available to rent: five models, the smallest being the CRF50 and the largest the CRF150. There are guideline ages for each bike, but in the end it is your child's size and riding ability that count. On site, every child gets a bike that fits them. The MX-Academy gives this guidance:

  • CRF50: automatic with centrifugal clutch, from approx. age 4
  • CRF110: electric start and automatic, ideal from 6 to 11 years
  • CRF125: electric start and manual gearbox, forgiving, ideal from 10 to 13 years
  • CRF150: designed for competition, ideal from 12 to 16 years
  • CRF250: for teenagers and adults

Children's dirt bike with clutch: from automatic to manual gearbox

On the CRF110, children quickly gain confidence, move more freely on the bike and learn the correct basic position. On the CRF125 you change gear manually, just like on the big bikes – ideal for practising the clutch. The CRF150 is even used for youth world championships; it suits children who can already handle a lot of power but for whom a 250 is still too big.

The F in CRF110F and CRF125F stands for Family. These F models are designed as beginner bikes for off-road riding, with fuel injection, electric start, quiet running and environmentally friendly technology. The R stands for Racing, i.e. competition bikes. The MX-Academy rents out both versions; for getting started, the F version is the right choice.

Motocross bikes for kids to rent: rental and getting here

To ride a kids dirt bike, you don't need to own one. Renting has advantages: you first see whether your child enjoys the sport, and you don't have to buy again after every growth spurt. The day course with rental includes everything, from the kids' bike to helmet, goggles, chest protector and boots, through to coaching. From home, you only need long trousers and sturdy shoes. If you do have your own bike, the lower price only applies if your child already rides on their own.

On Wednesday there are 3.5 hrs and on Saturday 4 hrs of track time available, breaks and instruction included; the whole course day lasts 6 to 8 hours. From Germany, the journey is easy to plan: around 1 hr from Waldshut-Tiengen or Rottweil, around 1 hr 15 min from Friedrichshafen, around 2 hrs 20 min from Ulm and around 3 hrs 20 min from Munich. With rental, the day costs €390 (CHF 360) on Wednesday or €444 (CHF 410) on Saturday, non-binding.

A course day lasts 6–8 hours in total, including registration, gear and theory. The hours shown are the available track time including the breaks and instruction you need, not pure time in the saddle: motocross is anaerobic, breaks are part of it – and that is exactly when the coaches give you more tips and tricks. For teenagers and adults, each of these days is the recommended taster course, because it gives you a real impression of the sport and shows your progress. Kids, teenagers, women and adults all pay the same; the only difference is whether you rent or bring your own gear. With rental: a Honda bike in your size, protective gear, coaching and basic course costs. With your own gear: coaching, track hire and basic course – provided you can already ride on your own, otherwise extra coaching for €54 (CHF 50) is added.
